Forget get grammar and think about potatoes.
––Gertrude Stein

After checking Wikipedia for grammar overviews
and Grammarly for syntactical reviews,
consider what Gertrude knew: Potatoes are easier to parse.

Since a rose is a noun is a verb is an adjective,
it is comforting that spuds are also multi-talented.
They own verbs that can modify
like baked/mashed/boiled/roasted/fried;
and, whether sweet/russet/red/golden/
or purple majesty, tators delight a body
nurturing a creative mind.

I ‘d like to think that after hours of crafting,
Gertrude would wait for Alice to serve shepherd’s pie.
More complex than semi-colon sentences
and defiant of every culinary rule,
its 95 recipes require only one necessity:
potatoes, mashed or baked, on top
of veal, lamb, or beef.

Gertrude would make mincemeat of this meal
and conclude grammar is merely grammar
while tubers are more natural
than the singular “they“ and split infinitives.
