Filling in the Blanks – A Poem by J.K. Durick

It’s near the end
Ready to be put away.
Another year
Used up
Ready to discard
Put on that pile
With all the other
Years gone by.
After a while
They become
Just numbers
We’ve lived through.
A few hang around
As memories
But become vague.
When did we…?
When was that?
It seemed momentous
When it happened
But now it’s mostly
A blank we feel foolish
Trying to fill in
Knowing most likely
We’ll get it wrong.
