Handy Handicap Places – A Poem by J.K. Durick

Yes, there are special plates and
Placards and places. we have
Seen them all, know them well.
Sometimes they are the few empty
Spaces in the lot. They look so simple,
So easy almost too easy. Pull in and
Stay for a short time and no one will
Be the wiser or park in the handicap
Place and give your best performance
As a handicap person climbing out of
Your car. If anyone asks, most won’t
You say that you left your placard at
Home or you can act like you don’t
Hear them, though deafness isn’t one
Of those handicaps covered by that
Designation. It’s a matter of the draw
– you get to the store and can’t find
A place to park, so you take a chance
On a handicap one, place that is reserved
And you pretend you have a reservation
Some day you will.
